Question 1

I am new to W. D. Gann. How do I learn about his methods?

L.G.E.: The best way to start learning about Mr. Gann's trading methods is to read the original books that he wrote. For commodity and futures traders the first one should be How to Make Profits in Commodities. For stock traders the first book should be 45 Years in Wall Street.

You should then read the rest of the trading books that he wrote. They are Truth of the Stock Tape, Wall Street Stock Selector, and New Stock Trend Detector.

Question 2

I have read Mr. Gann's books. What aspect of Gann theory should I study first?

L.G.E.: You should start by mastering 'price' behavior. Learn all you can about price ranges and swing charts. Swing charts take the 'noise' out of the market. Understand the concept of 'trend' using swing charts. Learn to use them in conjunction with bar, or preferably candlestick, charts.

Information on how to draw and use swing charts can be found in both the W. D. Gann Commodities Course and the W. D. Gann Stock Market Course.

Question 3

I have heard many good things about The Gann Experience seminar taught by Lambert-Gann Educators, Inc. What level of Gann knowledge is needed to attend?

L.G.E.: Lambert-Gann Educators, Inc. has designed the seminar to be extremely valuable for all levels of Gann students. The principles taught from the original books and courses are explained clearly, as well as demonstrated on actual market charts.

Because the information presented is very comprehensive, students are welcome to take a refresher course at a very reasonable fee. The Gann knowledge of these seminar participants takes a quantum leap every time they are exposed to a seminar of this intensity.

Question 4

I have heard that W. D. Gann was an astrologer. Is this true and do I have to learn astrology to learn his methods?

L.G.E.: This question brings emotional answers from those involved in the discussion. The best way to answer it is to deal with facts and not interpretations, or 'questionable quotes' from someone who talked to someone else who might have known W. D. Gann. The facts are that he certainly studied astrology in his later years.

However, the hundreds of charts and papers studied included very few that contained any reference to astrology. The mathematical calculations used by Lambert-Gann Educators, Inc. in teaching directly from Mr. Gann's original courses and books certainly prove that astrology is not necessary to duplicate his forecasts and trading style.

Question 5

I read where W. D. Gann made $50 million trading the markets. Is this correct?

L.G.E.: Unfortunately, we will never know the extent of Mr. Gann's trading profits. The facts are that Mr. Gann traveled extensively as well as having a summer home in New York and a winter home in Florida.

We know that he owned a yacht named the 'Coffee Bean'. He also owned several airplanes because he loved to fly. He was the first individual to own an all aluminum airplane. For a time he employed a full time pilot.

It is obvious that Mr. Gann lived a lifestyle that required considerable income. However, what is important is that the principles he taught still work on today's markets. To try to measure that legacy in trading profits does not do justice to his brilliance in understanding mathematical market movements.

Question 6

Why do so many Gann analysts and traders draw their charts by hand when there are some excellent computer programs with advanced Gann tools, such as Market Analyst?

L.G.E.: There are a number of reasons Gann enthusiasts draw charts by hand. These include the fact that:

  • Hand-drawn charts can be large and clear.
  • It is easy to add Gann angles, time counts and so on, to hand-drawn charts.
  • The hand/eye coordination involved in drawing the chart by hand enhances one's understanding of the chart.
  • It is often quicker to update a chart by hand than to boot a computer.
  • Hand drawn charts can have a constant scale. Computer charts generally make the chart fit the screen, thus changing the scale when more or less data is displayed.
In reality, most Gann enthusiasts would also own software such as Market Analyst to assist with complex computations, scanning markets and so on.
